Review: The Sabian HHX Shimmering 75 is designed in collaboration with one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, Jack DeJohnette. The cymbal is designed to commemorate the 75th birthday of Jack in 2018. Only 75 of these excellent instruments were hammered by the Sabian artisans. Writing a review of an instrument so rare that only a few lucky drummers in this world can lay sticks on almost feels like a sadistic act of cruelty. Yes, it’s that awesome!

Jack explained he always loved the sound and feel of the Sabian Crystal ride, a flat ride designed fort he late great Ed Thigpen. He wanted to capture the crystalline sound but take it a step further by adding a bell to it. Jack turned to Sabian GOAT Mark Love to design the cymbal that became the Shimmering 75.

The Shimmering 75 is 22” cymbal made of B20 bronze. It has a medium weight, around 2500 grams. It has HH and HHX hammering, a medium size bell wich is unlathed but very heavily hammered. The cymbal has a high profile, has pinpoint lathing on top and bottom and has a brilliant finish. The cymbal is signed by Jack, numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

The moment I first saw this cymbal I was struck by it’s appearance. The hammering, the bell, the brilliant finish just made it so attractive to play. This is one very versatile cymbal! If I could only bring one cymbal tot he gig, this would bet he one. It has a clear stick attack, nice high pitched, with just that nice shimmer and wash to it. It’s not loud but at low volumes, still present and controllable. The bell has a very clear and woody sound to it. It’s not klangy, it’s not to loud, it fits perfectly with the cymbal. The combination of this perfect bell with the controllable wash and definition makes it a perfect all-round cymbal. Because of the medium weight and the way the cymbal is lathed it has some crash ability. I wouldn’t call it a crash-ride but you can definitely lay into it if needed.

To be honest, the fact that it’s limited and designed by Jack and Mark, adds to the status of this cymbal. It’s a rare gem and it sounds delicious! I can play it on it’s own without drums or other cymbals and have fun for hours. Yes I have done that.. So if you get the chance to play or even buy this cymbal, go for it!!
