Review: "Trash Hats were created in conjunction with German drum sensation Benny Greb. Benny had originally been looking for a trashy “aux” hi-hat for his kit. However, the Trash Hats are designed to be stacked and used separately. In other words, the 14" could be your China, while the 12" could be your splash. As with the Electro Stacks, rearranging these cymbals can result in some interesting percussive permutations.

While I briefly used the Trash hats independently, my main focus was in setting them up as normal hats. (I also played them in a fixed, closed “aux”-hats style, which produced a washy alternative to my array of cymbals.) The top and bottom cymbals both boast an air-hole/filter design, which is a feature Meinl says was instituted to eliminate airlock and increase clarity. Meinl also contends that these hats can garner different response by loosening the nut and felt washers that secure the top cymbal on the clutch (creating more metal-on-metal contact). When I put this to the test, I received a voluminous and sizzle-y attack, much harsher than that of a “standard” pair of hi-hats."

Review: "At 12", the top cymbal of the Trash Hats is two inches narrower in diameter than that below, and has three airholes. The 14" bottom cymbal is china-shaped and sports a crinkled Soundwave edge. Due to the flange of the china, the two cymbals can be coupled in the usual manner on a hi-hat (or X-hat) stand, or the 14" bottom cymbal can be flipped and the pair can be stacked on a cymbal stand.

Closed tightly, the Trash Hats give a sharp, dry sound. Relaxed, their response is much thicker, with a metallic edge still present. The effect is much like a distorted snare sound, though they could also be used for keeping time. "

Review: "Up next are German wunderkind Benny Greb's signature 12"/14" Trash hats. Also made from FX9, they pair a normal 12" top cymbal with a 14" china below. Benny intended them to be used as auxiliary hats, but they can be mounted on a regular cymbal stand.

First impressions are of a high-pitched and metallic-sounding pair of hats; trashy, but in a clean way, without any darkness or exotic overtones. Closed tight and played with stick tips they are dry and crunchy. Once opened up a little they soon froth with a trashy wash.

When hit with the shoulder of the stick the sound is reminiscent of a tinny snare sample."
