Paiste's Description: <<< - >>>
Review: It is drier than the Dry Heavy Ride that Paiste used to offer in this series, thanks to the Colorsound coating. I don't know if the coating has anything to do with the pitch, but I must add that this one is higher-pitched than either of the other two non-coated versions of this ride. Immediately I noticed that when I play the profile with the tip of the stick that I could actually hear it making contact. (This is something I didn't notice on a non-coated Dry Heavy Ride, as those built up a wash that this one does not.) Among my three versions of the ride, this one has the nicest sounding bell. Perhaps the Reflector-finished bell smoothes out the overtones, as the other two's bells produce lots of discordance when struck with the shank of the stick.
I thought that the Colorsound coating might make cut the volume a bit, but what I found was the opposite - using a decibel meter, the "Monad" was a db or two louder than the other, non-color coated versions!

Review: "Danny Carey has been playing a traditional Signature Dry Heavy ride since 1990. Starting from this base, his signature model has a lathed bell, again in Reflector finish, while the rest of the surface is coated in translucent purple using Paiste's ColorSound process, decorated by three intertwined metaphysical symbols.

Both being heavy, the Duo and the Monad rides have vivid, pronounced stick responses. Both are also relatively dry, but the smaller 20" Duo is perhaps more versatile.

At 22" the Monad is bigger, definitely deeper, though not necessarily more aggressive. Responding to a heavier stick with a thicker bead, there is a tough dry angle to the beat, quite metallic but with the darker undercurrent always present.

We tried it on a classic rock gig and it effortlessly did the business, always strong and well-defined, the bell cutting through the loud guitar. Although heavy you can get a splanging crash if you work it hard enough. And even when things got really tasty and we ended up crash-riding it, it produced plenty enough meat to propel the band."
