Review: Since I had a set of Z series Dyno Beat Hi-Hats, I tried the K top hi-hat over both. What I found was that I liked the pairing that used the lighter of the two Z hats the best. This cymbal, which is the top Z, actually weighed less - 1128 grams - than the K bottom hat that came with the set. (Dyno Beat hi-hats from the original Z series didn't have top or bottom designations, but this was the one that looks like a star, what the company calls "Concave Open Penta".) This pairing was very precise, quick to respond, and was smooth-sounding. The pitch was pleasing, warm, and not brittle.
The other pairing I tried, with the cymbal typically used as a bottom on the K/Z hats, was quite a bit heavier than the other Z hat. This one weighed 1434 grams, just about the same as the bottom K hat, if perhaps a little on the heavy end. I found that these weren't as sensitive as the first set, losing some of the responsiveness. Also, this set was a little metallic sounding, in comparison to the first set's pairing.
Oddly enough, I didn't notice a major difference in pitch between either.
Both sets sounded nice using the foot pedal, producing a nice pronounced "chick" sound.
For the record, the K top hat weighed 985g.
